After the area was drenched with torrents of rain and the bike path was covered in inches of water, it was only the keen runners who ventured out.  The actual runners tackled the 4 kilometres and navigated the water as best they could.

Liza Martini made a very welcome appearance this evening.  She now lives in Townsville, but she is still very much a Broulee person.  Back in 2007, she and Mike Kennedy started the event on 7 February of that year, when they were training for the Canberra Marathon in April.  Through her many contacts she was able to attract people to the event.  From those seven starters, the event has established itself on the running calendar.  Many visitors enjoy the event and in holiday times we regularly get over 100 participants.

Broulee Runners will be highly active in various events this coming weekend.  The Lambert family have entered events in the Melbourne Running Festival.  Michael is running the marathon; Matt is running the half-marathon and Bernie is in the 10 kilometres. Karen Harding-Smith has entered the fun run at Reboot Bermagui.  Jenny Taylor is a member of a Broulee Team in a 10 Kilometre Surfboat Race on Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra.  We look forward to the results of these champion athletes.

Tonight, is a special occasion as we can celebrate Dave Connaughton reaching a magnificent milestone in the history of the Broulee Runners.  He now has clocked up 607runs.  Dave first run was on 27 February 2008, and he recorded a time of 26.37 for the 5-Kilometres.  His personal best time over this distance is 22.44, which he achieved on 16 May 2012.  The last time he ran the original course his time was 24.49 in wet and slippery conditions.  He is still an incredible athlete.  To prove this to be a fact he recorded a Personal Best time in the 4-kilometres this evening.  Well done, Dave!!!

Other personal best times were recorded by Poppy Melgaard in the 2-kilometres, by Jenny Taylor in the 3-kilometres and Barry King in the 4-kilometres.

Only one more run at 4.30 before we move to the 5 O’clock start which will be on 5th October with the introduction of Day Light Saving.

Perfect spring conditions allowed for the runners to push themselves and as a result there seven personal best times and one equal best time.  Isabella Fleming, Will smith, Karen Harding Smith, Nina and Andrew McPherson recorded PBs in the 2 kilometres.  Lily McIntosh and David McCann did PBs in the 3 Kilometres and the ever-improving Julie Amphlett equalled her best time over this distance.

We welcomed the Mackay family consisting of Alfie, Benji and Neil to their first run over the new course.  The boys brought along their friend Jude Issaakidas to experience the competition and fun,

The days are getting longer and in three weeks’ time we will be moving into day light saving time and this means we will be starting at 5 O’clock.
