This evening there were 18 actual runners who braved the colder conditions.  Also, we were fortunate to have 12 virtual runners record times.

We welcomed Crystal Aitken from Moruya to her first run with the group. She did a creditable time of 26.25 for the 5 kilometres and with her strong background it is certain that she will make a rapid improvement.  Warren Smith from Canberra made his first appearance as did Norman Lenehan who tested himself against Zoe Whymark in a virtual run.

Greg Castle improved his 5 kilometres time by one second. And Maddy Seidel completed her first 5-kilometres.  She is the 4th member of the family to have performed over this distance.

Congratulations to our volunteers, who managed the event.  They are Lisa Robbins, Robyn Kennedy, Victoria Fleming, and David McCann.

The Broulee Runners is about people of all ages and proficiency coming together to exercise and make new friends.  We have elite athletes like Daniel Baby of Hawaiian Ironman fame and Daniel Lloyd-Jones Australian representative in world Sprint Triathlon Championships.  There are more senior competitors like David McCann with 282 runs and Annie Johnsen with 175 runs over the three distances and we have young stars like 5-year-old Jye Barbara with 30-runs in the 2 kilometres.

During Covid restrictions we welcomed virtual runners and walkers to send times over any of the three distances completed at any location so that they can keep their interest in the event.  One day in the future we will all be able to come together.  It is hoped that this will be on 7 April this year with the celebration of our 700th run.

This evening we had 24 actual runners and 7 virtual runners.  Person best times were recorded by Tino Lopresti, Lachlan Dally and Greg Castle.

This evening we welcomed 22 actual  runners and 13 virtual runners. We welcomed Greg Castle and David Bain to their first run with the group and had John Lightfoot join us for his first run since 2009. It is wonderful to see the Broulee Runners continue to thrive and be a social activity for all levels. The camaraderie that has built over the years with some of the regulars is one of the lovely things about the Broulee runners group. There is always a lot of support and encouragement shown between all of the group and they welcome any new attendees with the same enthusiasm.

The success of the Broulee Runners is also due to the volunteers that help out each week. The ever-faithful supporters are Deb Connaughton, Richard Fisher, Robyn, and Mike Kennedy.  These four normally do their run earlier in the day so that they are on deck at the run.  Deb is the starter, announcer, timekeeper, and photographer.  Richard puts out the cones and hands out the place tickets.  Robyn records the finishers place and with Deb puts the finishers times against their name.  Mike stands around and tries to look important.  It is after the event that a large amount of work is done.  Robyn and Mike make an appropriate story and type up the results.  These are forwarded to Deb to polish and load onto Facebook with the photo.  Mike sends the copy to the Baypost and the Beagle.

Thanks must also go to our generous sponsors, Damien and Judy Kennedy for supplying the Broulee runners shirts and the Tomakin Sports and Social Club for donating our Multitimer to make the recording a lot easier.

The Bay Triathlon was held last Saturday 6 February and some of our regular Broulee runners participated. A few of the standout performances were Daniel Lloyd Jones who placed first in the Sprint Solo with a finishing time of 1.01.11. After completing his swim and bike leg Dan ran a very impressive 17.37 for the 5km run leg. Gary Ashton (pictured), Stephen Phipps and Julie De Ernsted competed  in the Standard Solo and all finished this gruelling event in outstanding times, all coming over the finish line just over the 3 hour mark. Well done to you all.

3 February 2021

On the 7 February 2007 Mike and Robyn Kennedy and Lisa Martini started the Broulee Runners.  The first run over 5 kilometres had 9 competitors and these were Miles and Jacinta Craighead, Meg MacCallum, Lisa Martini, Mike Kennedy, Father John Woods, Sharee and Peter Jackson.  Since that time, the run has seen many thousands of people from all locations in Australia and many overseas visitors come and enjoy the friendship and competition of the event.

Lisa initially was able to publish the event with a Blog on the internet and when Deb Connaughton (27-2-2008) took over promoting the event she set it up on FaceBook.  This took the event to another level.  The Baypost has been a tremendous supporter as has Lei Parker of the Beagle News.

Mention should be made of the contribution of Richard Fisher, who has been an important helper at the event sine 14 September 2011.

The attraction of the event is that allows elite athletes, young children, and elderly pensioners to test themselves over the 3 distances of 2, 3.5 and 5 kilometres.  Depending on the conditions there have been as few as 5 or as many as 120 people participate.

With current Covet restrictions we are only operating with one event over 5 kilometres.  We are attracting virtual runners over the 3 distances and will continue to do so for some time.  These times are recorded in Broulee and surrounds, Canberra, and Melbourne.

It was decided to wait for 10 more weeks to have a major celebration when it will be our 700th run and we anticipate that we will be fully operational with the 3 events at that time.

The star of tonight’s run is Stephen Seidel, who recorded his 30th run.  Running is part of the fitness program of the Seidel family as the six members have recorded 75 Broulee runs.
