27 April 2022

After consultation with many of the stake holders, it is the decision that we are to use course B for the time being to conduct the Wednesday run. The overall consideration is safety of the many participants. The track is still wet and narrow. The prime problem is the many exposed tree roots that could trip a runner or walker at any time. Given that there are participants from the very young to the more mature, our first consideration is their safety.

This is not the first change of course as in the beginning the start was at the toilet block near the boat ramp and turned around opposite Carters Shops.  It was changed to the current configuration once the bike path was completed.  This has been used for around 750 runs.  Should there be major improvements to this very popular walking track we will return!!!

We have had Elite athletes participate at our event and the records of Matt Johnsen (15.51) and Jaylah Hancock-Cameron (17.46) over the 5 kilometres may remain in the history books.  It is hoped that both will come and test themselves over the 4 kilometres to show the rest of us mortals how it is done!!

To show that we have made the correct decision the rain returned this evening!

The results are as follows:

2 Kilometres

Mia Atkin 11.45

Eli Melgaard 13.47

This evening we were back on the track and there were 29 excellent mud runners racing through the slop! The Hawkins boys showed outstanding form with Jason clocking up a personal best time by 7 seconds and Rocky missing his PB by 8 seconds.  This is excellent running in such soggy conditions.

We welcomed Celina and Kevin Miller, Sophie Ellis, Audrey Milcent, Milo Booth and Carlos and Vincent Garcia to their first run with the group.  A very special welcome is given to baby Serena Dunn, who was carried by Helen Oaky.  You can be never too young to be a Broulee Runner!!!!

Simon Wall, who lives in Canberra is in isolation and he managed to do his virtual 5-kilometres by running 350 laps around his garden.

The decision has been taken to have an alternate course when the track becomes too dangerous.  After the consultation with stake holder, a new Course B has been chosen. It will consist of three distances (2,3 & 4 Kilometres) along the footpath from Candlagan Creek to Heath Street. When a decision is made, for safety reasons, to use course B, a notice will go out. Those people, who miss the notice and who have assembled at the Anchor will be allowed time to move around to the Creek before the start.

Once again, the wet conditions have caused the event to be closed.  Senior members ran on the course in the last few days, and it is still very slippery and dangerous under foot.  For the safety of our competitors, the event starting at the Mossy Point Anchor has been abandoned for this week.  If runners want to submit a virtual time, it can be recorded against this evening’s run.

It is important to honour those Broulee runners, who performed with distinction at the Canberra Marathon running festival on Sunday 10 April 2022.  The list of those outstanding athletes is as follow:

MARATHON 42.20 KILOMETRES

LISA ROBBINS

GILL STAPLETON

TORI HENNIG

MATT LAMBERT

MICHAEL LAMBERT

MARK EVANS

NUNO GONCALVES

ANTHONY KENNEDY

HALF MARATHON 21.1 KILOMETRES

LAUREN EVANS

CHRISTIAN PROKSCH

They were all asked to secretly nominate their finishing times the night before the event and prizes were awarded to those who finished closest to their nominated time.  The winners were Lisa Robbins and Lauren Evans.  This is a good indicator of how they managed their race and their training program.

Run times submitted this evening are as follows:

2 Kilometres

Finn Smart 21.26

Bridget Doherty 21.26

5 Kilometres

Paige Connaughton 22.33

Dave Connaughton 26.10

Deb Connaughton 27.45

Jenny Taylor 29.35

Simon Wall 31.22

Mike Kennedy 44.15

Robyn Kennedy 46.02

Broulee Run goes international as we had Nuno Goncalves visiting from Sri Lanka running this evening.  He is here on holidays and will be running in the Canberra Marathon on Sunday 10th April.

The first run in normal time was again in wet and windy weather.  The track was again very treacherous, and the 18 actual runners performed very well in the conditions.

We welcomed Gavin, Byron, and Rowan Grant from Queensland.  They have family living in the district.  In past visits they have clocked up several runs.  We also welcomed Kehlei Cowan, Finn Smart to their first run with the group.   Bridget Doherty made a welcome reappearance after a long break to record her 12th run.

Paige Connaughton recorded a personal best time and now has a 15 second gap over her father, the Broulee Runners legend Dave Connaughton.  Dave will need to have less parties and more training to catch up

The results are as follows:
