Australia Day had a big impact on the number of actual runners to turn up this evening.  An excellent evening at the beach and the attraction of the new Broulee Brewhouse were more appealing.  We are pleased with the performance of the 9 dedicated runners, who ran at the Mossy Point Headland this evening

Congratulations to Jenny Taylor, who turned up after being on Patrol with the Broulee Surf Club.  She is an all-round athlete as she leaves tomorrow to attend a Surf Carnival at Forster.  We welcomed back Scott Melgaard after an absence of two years working overseas.  He is keen to improve and get back under his personal best in the 5-kilmetres of 19.59.  He is in a good place with fellow teacher and champion runner Matt Johnsen to work with.

We welcomed Chloe Stuart to her first run with the group.  Chloe is from Canberra and spends time at the coast working from home Like many others who have the best of both worlds.

The Runners having survived the Tsunami this week and tonight they had to contend with gale force winds. Regardless 60 people fronted Deb Connaughton, who was back from isolation, to start the event.  Personal best times were hard to achieve. However, Millie Shanahan, after a long absence, recorded an improvement in the 2-kilometres; as did William and James Thomas. In the 3.5-kilometres, Anabel Thomas recorded an excellent time of 14.01.  This time is outstanding and only 37 seconds away from the current record set by the famous Jayla Hancock-Cameron. In the 5-kilometres the rising star Tino Lopresti powered home for a personal best. Stephanie Dawson was impressive with a 28 second improvement in difficult conditions.

Tonight, we said farewell to Thach Huynh and Yvonne Carter and family, who are regular visitors from Canberra. They have embraced the running scene in the district.  They train with the locals, compete in the Bay Park run and have had 28 Broulee runs between them.

We have come a long way since 7 February 2007 and have survived Bush Fires, Floods and Lockdowns.  Tonight, marks the 739th run since the event began.  David Connaughton started 27 February 2008 and he has participated in 573 of these events.  However, tonight, he is laid low as a Covid close contact.  Runners going past his place could see him gazing sorrowfully out the window.

There were 80 starters this evening and the quality was certainly on show with excellent times in all three events.  In the 2 kilometres the top five were under 8 minutes and in the 3.5 kilometres Cameron Lunn, after a long absence, recorded his best time of 16.39.  In the 5-kilometres the top five were under 20 minutes.

In the 2-kilometres PBs were recorded by Eddie Olah, William Smith, Karen Harding-Smith, Alby Clark, Eli and Scott Melgaard, and Lilly Cecere.  In the 3.5-Kilometres besides Cameron Lunn another runner named Niamh Scahill recorded a PB.  In the 5-kilometres Andrew Olah and Yvonne Carter recorded personal best times.

Because we could not have Dave were we lucky to have a good substitute with the new Mayor of the Eurobodalla shire, Matt Hatcher, turn up to record his 3rd run with the group.

The first run of 2022 attracted 80 starters to the run this evening.  There were many visitors from all parts of the country.  There were some excellent times recorded with 14 personal bests achieved.

In the 2-kilometes Molly and Anna Johnson improved their times from last week. Emily and Zavier Huynh recorded PBs.  In the 3.5-kilometres Jacob Shepherd an Aliza Levy improved and in the 5-kilometres there were 8 personal best times.  Thomas and Zara Menzies-Stegbauer showed continued improvement with another strong effort.  John and Aislinn Scahill pleased their supporters with improved performances.  Greg McCann, a member of the family noted for its strong runners, did not disappoint with his PB   Tess Aungles, a regular visitor to the run recorded a PB.  Jason Hawkins and Anna Crisp rounded off strong performances in this distance in achieving their PBs.

We celebrated the achievement of Anthony Kennedy in being awarded his 30-run shirt.  We also celebrated Sandra and Stephanie Lunn in recording their 100 runs.  Stephanie did her first run on 19 March 2014, with sister Bridget and brothers Bradley and Cameron and Mother Sandra joined on 30 April 2014.  The 5 members of the Lunn family have been great supporters of the event having recorded a total of 385 runs between them.
