This evening we held event number 746.  The day was very wet and humid, and the track was not conducive to fast times as there was mud and ankle-deep water.  However, Audrey and Anthony Knobel improved their times after a long absence from the run.  Violet Kerr and Eli Melgaard also ran personal best times.

We welcomed Aurora, Vicki, and Mikinley Blewitt to their first run.  Also, Ali O’Brien and Harry Jackson made their first appearance.  Harry arrived late and had to play catch up and ran an impressive time of 21.31 for the 5-kilometres.

The Evans family Mark (dad) and Lauren tackled the Snowy Mountain Trail Run Half Marathon last weekend and finished first in their categories.  Karen Harding-Smith will run in the Husky 10 kilometres next weekend.  We have lots of Broulee runners challenging themselves over longer distances.  We look forward to strong performances from Michael and Matt Lambert, and Lisa Robbins in the Canberra Marathon on 10 April 2022.

A very warm and windy afternoon greeted our runners this week, the headwind on the return run proved very challenging. We welcomed Ian Kennedy to the group, Ian has moved to the area to live and will hopefully become a regular participant.

A special mention must go to Daniel Beby who completed his 200th run. Daniel is an outstanding runner and has competed against the best in the world in the Hawaiian Ironman. Daniel joined the group on the 17 June 2015 and along with his wife Michelle and children Riley, Mitchell and Ashley have been regular participants over the years. It has been wonderful watching his young family grow up and all become strong runners in their own right.

With Mike and Robyn taking a well deserved break, we thank Richard and David for helping out with the time keeping. We are very fortunate to have so many wonderful volunteers who are always ready to help out.

15 years ago, Miles and Jacinta Craighead, Meg MacCallum, Rev Father John Woods, Sharee and Peter Jackson, Liza Martini and Mike Kennedy set off for the first Broulee Run.  Robyn Kennedy was there, of course, keeping the records.  It was a struggle initially and it wasn’t till 14 March 2007 that we had a respectable number of 11 starters, one of whom was Annie Johnsen.  One Christmas, visitors swelled the numbers and the record of 120 starters competed.  The Tomakin Sports and Social Club assisted in purchasing a Seiko Multi Timer to manage the time recording and Judy and Damien Kennedy sponsored the Broulee Runners Shirts.  These are given to anyone reaching 30 runs and so far, 186 people wear the shirt with pride.

We welcomed Amelia Wilks, Kehlie Cowan and Amy Coulton to their first run with the group.  Personal best times in the 2-kilometres were recorded by Kira Pendlebury, Archie Gilligan, and Violet Kerr.

Daniel Lloyd-Jones competed in the Batemans Bay triathlon and was first in the Sprint Solo event.  In the same race Scott Melgaard come 12th another regular runner Matt Edenborough managed 19th place.

The Broulee run must be good training as Jenny Taylor won the 2 kilometres beach run in a recent surf carnival.  She also won a number of medals in the Broulee/Moruya Surf Carnival last weekend.

This evening we had forty starters and lots of personal best times.  In the 2-kilometres PBs were recorded by Kira Pendlebury, Neve Lenehan, Stella Lloyd-Jones, Millie Shanahan, Archie Gilligan, Violet Kerr, Eli Melgaard and Rhett Guthrie.  In the 3.5-kilometres PBs were recorded by Bradley Lunn and Poppy Melgaard.

Dan Lloyd-Jones and Scott Melgaard were using tonight to limber up for the triathlon this coming weekend.  They both are expected to feature prominently in the results.

We welcomed Atul Sharma and Emily Tugwell, who are both medical students working locally.  We also were pleased to welcome Monica Kerr for her first run, who helped her daughter Violet run a PB.

Next week we celebrate the 15th year of the Broulee Runners, which commenced on

on 7 February 2007.  The inspiration to start the event was when Liza Martini and Mike Kennedy were training for the 2007 Canberra Marathon.  As there were no competitive running events in the district, they decided to organise a handicap event over 5-kilometres.  The idea was that slower runners were given a start and the faster tried to catch them.  This idea of a handicap event was dropped a year later in favour for a group start.

The 3.5-kilometres was added in September 2008.  A year later the 2-kilometres was added.

As a result of having this competition Liza went on to complete her first marathon in a time of 3.57.58 and Mike his 19th and last in 3.56.18.  Liza went on to improve her performances and Mike went out backwards.  The only other original, of the early months, still fronting up on Wednesday evenings to run is Annie Johnsen.  Annie started on 14 March 2007 and has 194 runs on the board.

Women have been the backbone of the event. The wonderful three are Deb Connaughton, Robyn Kennedy, and Liza Martini.

We hope that as many as possible will come next week to celebrate the occasion.  Because of COVID we will not be able to have the usual birthday cake – maybe next year!
