30 September 2020

We are now into week 29 of the isolated Broulee Runners and Walkers.  We will be back on Wednesday 14 October 2020 at 5PM with 5 kilometres run only.  People will still be able to register a run over any of the three distances in their own time and location and have it registered.

There have been some impressive performances during this period with some breaking the 20-minute barrier in the 5 kilometres.  Matt Lambert is the standout benefiting from the Tori Hennig Sunday training group.  Tori often posts these Sunday runs on the Broulee Runners Facebook page.

We look forward to seeing Michelle Connor, Tess Klower and Anthony Smith coming back and doing their 30th run and receive their celebration T-shirt.  Others, who have already achieved this mark, but because of the isolation have not received their shirt.  They are Brock Gilligan, Angie Gannon, and Simon Wall.  These shirts are sponsored by Judy and Damien Kennedy.

The run has continued as an isolated event for the 28thweek.  It is anticipated that we may be able to get together to run a 5-kilometre event on Wednesday14 October 2020 at 5PM.  A Covid safety plan is being developed and because of the need to keep social distance it is not safe at this stage to have the usual three events starting at the same time.  As restrictions are lifted, we can look at incorporating the other events.

The principle used at other distance running events is “Get in, Run, Get Out”.  This means the usual socialising will not be possible.

There will not be any time restriction on people participating in the 5-kilometres.  Therefore, everyone is welcome to participate provided there is sufficient light to see only when it gets dark will the “hook come out”.

Special mention is given to Andrew McPherson (pictured) whose family have an impressive 450 runs between them.  He has a personal total of 228.  He is also a long-distance runner, bike rider, member of the surf club and bushfire hero.

This is week 27 of the Broulee Run isolated and we continue to get a good response from the community doing runs in their own time and in some cases in their own location.  There are some outstanding people, who contribute to the running scene in the district.  One of these people is Tracy Denning, who has recorded 75 runs today.  Her first run was on 8 February 2017.  She has also completed numerous Park Runs and with her trusty dog Rocket volunteers on a regular basis.  She a motivator and training partner for other runners.  She intends to go to the next level by entering a half marathon.

There were athletes in the 19 posted times that exceeded their personal expectations, and these were Tom Hofsteede, Matt Lambert, Bernie Lambert, and Angie Gannon.

Broulee Runners have been running isolated for half a year today and it is appropriate to honour those who have completed all 26 runs in the series and they are as follows: Dave, Deb and Paige Connaughton, Robyn and Mike Kennedy, Bede Webster, Ross Wilson, Simon Wall, Matt Lambert and David McCann.

We welcome a new runner by the name of Tom Hofsteede.  Tom is a work colleague of Simon Fearn and upon learning that Simon was 100 plus Broulee runner, he was determined to better Simon’s time for the 5 kilometres.  In Tom’s first attempt, he managed to equal Simon’s time for the 5-kilometres of 22.43.  He has now bettered Simon’s time.

There has been consultation with several people on the way back to getting together.  At this stage we are looking at the middle of October and because difficulties in separating people by handling three events at the same time, it has been decided to run only the 5-kilometres initially.  The other two events will be incorporated as conditions improve.  People will still be able to run any of the three distances in their own time and place and have the results recorded.

We will be developing a COVID-19 Safety Plan using the NSW guidelines and looking at other plans adopted by athletic organisations.  This plan will be reviewed by those who manage the event and then it will be made public to all Broulee Runners.

Run Isolated Broulee is now in the 25th week and we are still having a hard core of fit people, who are prepared to test themselves against the clock.  This evening we celebrated Bernie Lambert completing her 30th run.  She is the mother of Matt, who clocked 200 runs last week and the supporter of husband Michael, who has now completed 21 runs.  Bernie has completed several Park Runs and was registering impressive times, however she has several sets back with injuries.  Nevertheless, she puts these aside as “injuries of excellence” and works hard to reclaim her former fitness.
