Great conditions greeted the twenty-two actual runners this evening, we were also pleased to have nine virtual runners submit times.  As the word spreads that we are back at the Mossy Point Headland at 5 PM, we expect that more runners and walkers will come back to test themselves after the long break.

We celebrated Bernie Lambert’s 100th run, Bernie started with the 2-kilometres distance on 5 November 2014 with a time of 10.13, which is still her personal best at this distance.  She has since run numerous 5-kilometres distances both with the Broulee runners and the Batemans Bay parkrun.  She has also competed in fun runs and Half Marathons. She is also a local hero fighting against Covid by administering ‘jabs’ in Goulburn, Bega, Batemans Bay and Moruya.

Personal best times were recorded by Nicole Minifie in the 2-kilometres, by Julie Amphlett in the 3.5-kilometres and Karen-Smith in the 5-kilometres.

This evening was our first outing with 10 actual runners in atrocious conditions with lots of wind, mud, and water.  We were pleased to have 21 virtual runners, which is very special under these uncertain times.

It was great to get back together and those who came relished the opportunity to catch up after the long break.  There were the usual volunteers of Deb Connaughton, Robyn Kennedy, and Richard Fisher.  Mike Kennedy was in his usual meet and greet role trying to look important.

This evening could be the last of virtual only run as the 80% vaccination level may bring redemption.  We will be excited to announce when the coming together will happen.

It is worth reflecting on some statistics of the event from the beginning on 7 February 2007 when 7 people lined up for the first event.  Since that time there has been 527 events and many thousand of people of various abilities have participated (too many to count).  It is worth noting that 235 people have accumulated 20 or more runs.  The list runs go from Eva Barker with 20 runs to Dave Connaughton (pictured) with a massive 561 runs.  David should be a poster boy for a brand of running shoes.

The event is for all levels of talent from the very young in mum’s arms to elderly with some level of disability.  However, it is worth mentioning the local athletes, who have achieved excellence.  The outstanding female is Jaylah Hancock-Cameron, who holds all female records over the three distances and has a time of 17.46 in the 5-kilometres.  Matt Johnsen holds the record of 15.51 in the 5-kilometres.  Both have featured in National events with distinction and at peak fitness would lower these times considerably.

We welcomed back Sophie Dunn, whose first and only run was on 3rd of January 2018 with a time of 27.13 in the 5-kilometres.  We look forward to seeing her more often.

Georgia Finlay knocked 87 seconds from her 5-kilometres best time and Karen Harding-Smith improved her time by 6 seconds.

The times presented this week are as follows:

With the introductions of Daylight Saving and coming of Freedom Day next Monday 11 October it is likely that the Broulee Runners may be able to come out to play together.  There is a need to look at the fine print and consult with our advisors, yet all looks positive.  Further advice will follow!!!

The celebrity people of the week are Mollie and Samson Kennedy, who are regular visitors from Canberra having seventy-nine runs between them.  They have excellent 2-kilometre times of 7.38 and 8.11, respectively.  Their parents Anthony and Emma are outstanding athletes and their grandparents have achieved in athletic pursuits.

We look forward to Michelle Connor coming back to the runners to achieve her 30th run.  Also, Bernie Lambert needs only three more runs to become a centurion along with 43 others to achieve this mark in the 14-year history of the event.

Personal best time of 8.11 was recorded by Samson Kennedy in the 2-kilometres.

The award for consistent performance during the lockdown period must go to the Atkin/Minifie family, who have recorded times most weeks during this period.
