June 2020

The curse of COVID has struck the Broulee Runners again.  On the 14 October 2020 we were able to come together after 30 weeks of running isolated and now we are under the tight restrictions again.  Nevertheless, we have several dedicated supporters of the event, who have submitted times they recorded over one of the three distances.

In the 2 kilometres the time submitted by Mitchell Beby is a 28 second PB and in only 7 seconds behind his outstanding athletic old brother Riley.  Mollie Kennedy recorded a 14 second improvement on her previous best time.  Her younger brother Samson Kennedy establish an official time of 8.48 as his previous best was over a shortened course.

In the 5 kilometres Josh Connaughton recorded a 15 second PB it is obvious that his recent shoulder surgery has not slowed him down.

Tonight, was the first run after the solstice and the anticipation is that the days get longer.  However, we were given false hope as some finished in the dark!  This was the case with Emma Pugsley, our new runner, who mis-judged the 5-kilometre course and got a little lost.

The star of the night was Lulu Henley, who recorded an excellent personal best in her 4th attempt at the distance.

There were excellent times in the 2-kilometres by Mitchell Beby and Keira Aitken.  First boy and first girl in a strong field over this distance on a course that was very wet and muddy.

We welcomed back Angie Gannon after an absence of two years.

The rain started to fall right on 4.30pm as the runners set off on this weeks run, this made for a muddy, slippery track.

We welcomed Gijs Vonk, who is visiting the area, to his first run with the group. It was nice to see Simon Wall join us in person, Simon who lives in Canberra has ran with the group for many years and regularly sends in his virtual time to be recorded.  Congratulations go to Tino Lopresti and Daniel Greenway on accomplishing impressive PB’s on a tough course.

Tonight we celebrated the 30th run of Daniel Greenway and presented him with his Broulee Runners shirt. The new shirt seemed to do wonders with Daniel’s time and he achieved an impressive PB, he is pictured with his father Andrew. The Greenway family are great supporters of the event with brother James and mother Natalie having accumulated 137 runs between them.

A special mention to all our young runners who have participated in the regional Cross Country events held last week in Sydney. From tonights run we had Tino Lopresti, Alexis Carver and Lilly McIntosh who all achieved fantastic results.

Tonight, there were “15 Runners in the Storm” and 5 virtual runners.  There is an old saying that real runners run in the rain and the magnificent 15 proved that tonight.  Lauren Evans, Matt Lambert, Gary Ashton, and Zoe Whymark were able to back up after competing in the Kiama Classic Half Marathon held last Sunday.  They all produced excellent times with Lauren coming in as the first woman to cross the finish line.  The tough course was over a hilly trail with lots of hazards including sloping ground, rocks, and sand.
