27 December 2023

Over 90 starters contested the last event of 2023.  To add to the experience there was torrential rain that soaked the contestants, officials, and spectators.  There was considerable effort into recording and attempts to take down the times.  Therefore, if there are any errors in names, time, and distances we apologize as the crew had to work with great difficulty.  Congratulations to Deb Connaughton, Richard Fisher, Kristen, and Robyn Kennedy on managing the difficult tasks of recording.

Despite the conditions we had 20 personal best times.  In the 2-kilometres the improvers were James Gunn, Declan McPherson, Charlie and Jake Trevaskis, Evelyne Caron, Abby Johnson, Emma Kennedy, Nina McPherson, Sarah Crooks, and Ross Norgate.

In the 3-kilometres PBs were recorded by Alexis Carver and Kelsey Pye.  In the 4-kilometres PBs were recorded by Thomas Menzies Stegbauer (only 28seconds from the record), Hugo and Louis Hayward, Lewis Gunn, Grace Johnson, Fiona McKinnon, Jason Hawkins, Jason Stegbauer and Robert Turner.

Congratulations to Rob Kellett on receiving his 30-run shirt.  We were unable to do the formal presentation as the heavens opened and we needed to get the event started early.  We will do the presentation next week,

This evening in the Runners Christmas Picnic run there were 76 starters.  We welcomed Thomas Thuroczy, Eddy Lee, Bridget Delaney, Zac Clark, Jessica Gault, Fiona McKinnon and Emma and Kate Corcoran to their first run with the group.

There were 14 personal best times recorded.  In the 2-kilometres Poppy Melgaard improved by 8 seconds, Kelsey Pye improved by 53 seconds, Emma Kennedy improved by 5 seconds, Max Gunn improved by 8 seconds, Jann Simmons improved by 16 seconds, Olive Issaakidis improved by 44 seconds, Maxine Plant by 4 seconds, Cillian Delaney by 2 seconds, Saoirse Delaney by 8 minutes and 10 seconds.

In the 4-kilometres the improvers were Geordie Cox by 11 seconds, Nuno Goncalves by 38 seconds, Mark Nolan by 11 seconds and Meg Edenborough by 50 seconds.

The best time recorded on the night was from Matt Johnsen, who ran an incredible time of 12.52 over the 4-kilometres course with an improvement of 16 seconds.  Matt is an elite runner having run in America in the National Cross-Country Championships.  He has also been competitive in national marathon events.

We were pleased to be able to present Simon Wall with his 30-run shirt.  Simon lives in Canberra and during Covid he did most of his runs over 5-kilometres remotely.  Because of work and health reasons he has not be able to do many of the actual runs on a Wednesday at Broulee.  He is very proud of the shirt, and it will be seen regularly in Canberra as Simon does his daily runs.

A strong field of 47 starters in this evening’s event with 5 achieving personal best times.  In the 2-kilometres the Gunn boys again excelled.  James improved by 1 second and Lewis equalled his PB.  Kelsey Pye continues to improve lowering her best by 15 seconds and Amanda De Grave improved by 5 seconds.

In the 3-kilometres Luke Lawrence improved by 2 seconds.  In the 4-kilometres Meg Edenborough improved once again this time by 5 seconds.

We welcomed Evelyn, Hugo, and Yolanda McKean to their first run with the group.  We look forward to seeing them on many more occasions.

The Domeny parents are approaching significant achievements with Jason on 98 runs and Julianne on 198 runs.  Looking forward to celebrating these events!

Although storm clouds were circling and there was lightning in the far distance, yet this did not deter 42 starters from setting off over one of the three distances in tonight’s event.  There were 7 personal best times recorded.

In the 2-kilometres James and Lewis improved by 6 and 17 seconds respectively.  Callum Dawson improved by 30 seconds.  Lily Williams improved by 30 seconds and Alyssa Birks reduced her PB by a massive 86 seconds.

In 3-kilometres the ever-improving Ross Wilson clipped another 36 seconds from his best.  In the 4-kilometres Meg Edenborough managed to improve her time by 45 seconds.

We were fortunate to have Dave Hosking join the run before he moves to New Zealand.  Dave is a champion ultra distance runner.  He was also an active member of the Broulee Surf club with his wife Sue Lindsay.  They will be missed by the local community.

We had Broulee Runners competing at Husky and some in Triathlons.  These results will be posted when they come to hand.

There was a real party atmosphere at the event this evening with families enjoying a birthday party and watching the 56 runners strut their stuff.  It was a celebration of another kind with Stephen Seidel and Ross Wilson performing their 100th runs and Sara Norgate receiving her 30-run shirt.

Ross Wilson was one of the originals having run 5-kilometres on the 13 February 2008 in a time of 24.38.  He rates his effort as the record holder of taking the longest time to reach this target.  Stephen Seidel is a more consistent performer having started on 7 August 2019 and ran the 5-kilomrtres in 24.59.

Sara Norgate started with the group on 12 October 2022 and ran the 2-kilometres with her youngest son Harvey.  She is the mother of a remarkably athletic family with all four excellent athletes.  She is an inspiration to them.

It was not a night for Personal Best times as there were only 4 achievers.  In the 2-kilometres Elysa Birks improved by 24 seconds and in the 3-kilometres Erin Domeny improved by 2 seconds and in the 4-kilometres Katharina Birks improved by 17 seconds.

Back to winter conditions with a cold wind confronting the 43 starters in this evening’s run.  The conditions did not deter the young runners, who immediately after the run were jumping off the bridge!

There were 9 personal best times recorded.  In the 2-kilometres Benji Mackay improved by 5 seconds; Marcus Mackay improved by 6 seconds and Ross Wilson clocked up another PB by 9 seconds.

In the 3-kilometres Luke Lawrence improved by 9 seconds; Kelsey Pye improved by a massive 65 seconds and Aaron Atteridge by 30 seconds.  In the 3-kilometres Anthony Snowball improved by 14 seconds; Chloe Tangney by 60 seconds and Meg Edenborough by 48 seconds.

There is very sad news that the Beagle Weekly will not be available because of the ill health of the editor Lei Parker.  The Run has had a long association with Lei, and we will miss the support that he has given Broulee Runners over many years.
